Here are some of the most interesting Halloween Festival celebrations:

  • Día de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is the way Mexicans celebrate Halloween. It begins on the night of October 31st and continues through to November 2nd. Mexicans consider this day as an opportunity to decorate the graves of their relatives or friends who have passed away.
  • Teng Chieh is how the Chinese call their Halloween celebrations. They place food and water in front of photos of their relatives who have passed away. Bonfires and lanterns are also lit as it is believed that the lights will guide their spirits as they travel the earth during the night of Halloween.
  • The Obon Festival, also known as the “Matsuri” or “Urabon”, is the traditional Japanese celebration for Halloween. The Obon Festival lasts three days and a fire is lit each night in order to show the ancestors where their families might be found so they can visit their old homes.
  • The Yue Lan celebration, also known as the Hungry Ghosts Festival, is the Halloween festival celebrated in Hong Kong, where it is believed that ghosts roam the world for a whole day. Elaborate meals are prepared and served with empty seats as the families worship their deceased and treat them as if they were still living.

And of course, then we have our traditional Halloween celebrations, during which people and children dress up in scary costumes and go from house to house asking for treats!
