Interesting Language Facts


  1. Although we cannot be 100% sure, we know that there are between 6,800 and 6,900 languages in the modern world, with Chinese (Mandarin) at the top of the list and Spanish in the second place.
  2. Eskimoes have hundreds of words for ice but none for hello.
  3. The Chinese language places high importance on titles such as Mr, Sir, Mrs, Ms or Miss. It is considered impolite to refer to others by their name only.
  4. The word “set” in the English language has the most dictionary definitions.
  5. The Italian word “pepperoni” is the plural of “peperone”, which means pepper. The correct Italian word for pepperoni on a pizza is “salame piccante”.
  6. The most common name in the world is Mohammed.
  7. The combination of Latin, English, German and Romance languages led to the origin of the Esperanto language in 1887 devised by Dr. Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof. Esperanto is now considered to be a language spoken by roughly about 2 million people all over the world.
  8. The longest word in the Finnish language, that isn’t a compound word, is ‘epaejaerjestelmaellistyttaemaettoemyydellaensaekaeaen’. In English it means ‘even with their lack of ability to disorganize’.
  9. All pilots on international flights identify themselves in English.
  10. The longest one-syllable word in English is ‘screeched’.
