The Arabic Language and Arabic Lessons

The Arabic Language and Arabic Lessons

The Arabic Language

It comes as no surprise that the Arabic language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world with 29 countries and over 250 million speakers spread across several continents. Arabic is an ancient Semitic language which was mostly spoken during its origins and no written records can be found until the 7th century AD.

There are two types of Arabic: Modern Standard Arabic and Classical Arabic, with the former being used for most types of communication these days.

It is also one of the official languages of the United Nations, the African Union and the Arab League. Arabic is also the sacred language of the Koran and millions of Muslims around the world speak it.

Interesting Facts

Arabs are extremely hospitable people and are renowned for making their guests feel comfortable in their homes and offices. It is considered impolite to refuse a gift so you should always make sure to accept gifts and other offerings.

The Arabic Language is written in script, it is not printed, and it reads from right to left; however, interestingly enough, numerals are written from left to right. Arabic has over 4.5 million words in its vocabulary and has been classified amongst one of the richest languages; in contrasts, English only has around 1.5 million words.

All Arabic words begin with a consonant and are followed by a vowel. The English language has borrowed many words from Arabic, including chemistry, orange, checkmate, algebra, giraffe and mummy.

Benefits of Online Language Lessons

Benefits of Online Language Lessons

Technology has truly changed the way people learn and access education. As connectivity has become a more integral part of our daily lives, the availability of information has literally jumped straight to our fingertips, whether at the touch of a screen or at the click of the mouse. A quick look around the web will show an increasing availability of courses catering to various areas of learning. This phenomenal growth in technology has opened new and exciting avenues for people to learn and develop their language skills.

In recent years, online language learning has been one of the main areas that have benefited from this development. Connectivity at increasing speeds has eliminated the barriers and challenges associated with learning a new language, which include physically finding a qualified teacher, having an ideal environment for both the teacher and the learner, and effective use of learning tools beyond the traditional books, pencil and paper.

Online Language Lessons

A common question has been raised – Is the use of the Internet and online tools and effective way to learn?

Just ask the hundreds of thousands of online students around the world who have not only found this new setup convenient but have also slashed their language learning costs in half. Online language learning has waived the need for a common learning site, hence the need to travel and the need to pay for the space have been effectively reduced, if not completely eliminated. This is true not only for online language learning but for traditional learning as well. Major universities around the world have recognised the untapped power of online learning, setting up their own online campuses with a rapidly increasing list of courses being offered.

The Importance of Accuracy in Legal Translations

Legal Translations

The Importance of Legal Translations

Given the fact that so many people are using also a language other than its native one and that global commerce on the rise, numerous companies increasingly need legal translations of multilingual contracts, forms, tenders and many other documents. It may seem like a trivial task to most of us, but let’s face it: Legal translations are absolutely necessary and mission-critical, here is why.

A major first step is to acknowledge that translating legal documents is a very complex task and it can only be done by professionals. Corporations cannot afford to make any mistakes as even the tiniest errors can cause huge damages resulting in lawsuits and legal exposure that will consume the company’s resources.

What kind of documents fall within the category of Legal Translations?

Efficient and accurate legal translations are not hard to find if we look in the right place. So let’s all take a good look at what legal translations are supposed to cover:

Contracts
Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights
Immigrations and Employment documents
Affidavits
Tenders
Judicial Transcripts
Confidentiality Agreements
Applications/Appeals/Court Decisions
Licensing Agreements
Powers of Attorneys
Sales Deeds
Minutes of meetings
Trusts

As you can see, if a company is trying to prepare a translation of any of the legal matters outlined above, it makes absolute sense to get in touch with a professional legal translations provider, such as The Translation Studio, a company which specializes in legal language solutions among other fields.

Skills a Legal Translations agency should have

• Confidentiality

Matters of legal significance are usually confidential, and so, a legal translator should be of credible standing and is expected to maintain client confidentiality.

• Accuracy

Accuracy is the single most important quality a legal translator should have. Accurate legal translations are extremely important for businesses and they can even be a deal breaker for some. Of course, if you are translating a simple email or an informal conversation with a friend, you don’t need to seek the help of professionals, anyone speaking the language and willing to help will do, but what about legal translations?

Mistranslations can sometimes have devastating effects. This is why it is always recommended to hire a specialist who will assure that all of your documents are translated to a high quality standard. In some cases, hiring an independent translator or getting help from your colleague who speaks the language in question might be helpful; however, the most reliable service providers to avoid any significant legal translations issues are translation agencies.

• Laws from different countries

When dealing with legal translations, in order to be able to translate with ease, a legal translator should be well versed with the laws of each country involved. Extensive legal knowledge is a pre-requisite for a reliable legal translator.

• Speed

The Translation Studio uses state-of-the-art translation tools to optimize the translation process and reduce delivery frames and rates, with a dedicated team of Project Managers who ensure the best translators are selected for each project. The translation process, however, does not end when we deliver our translation to you, our dedicated Project Managers then move on to build glossaries and Translation Memories as needed so that we will be able to ensure consistency throughout our clients’ documentation from the very first project.

The Translation Studio, a leading provider of language solutions, provides translation services which undergo three quality assurance steps: Translation + Proofreading + Quality Management. We also assign a dedicated project manager to each one of our projects to ensure your translations are completed in a smooth manner and consistency is maintained throughout. And with a large pool of qualified and specialized legal translators around the world, TTS is able to provide your business with the quality it needs.

Next time you are in doubt, remember that mistranslations can cause serious damage to your business and engage a professional translation agency like us so that your message doesn’t get lost or is misinterpreted. The Portuguese Language & Portuguese Lessons

The Portuguese language is the official language in 9 countries and is spoken by about 230 million people in Brazil, Portugal and other former Portuguese colonies. The Portuguese language is the third most spoken European language and the eighth most spoken language in the world. Although Standard Portuguese (based mainly on the dialects spoken between Lisbon and Coimbra in Portugal) and the Brazilian Portuguese dialect (Brasiliero) are mutually intelligible, they are still quite different in several aspects. Here are some interesting facts about the Portuguese language:

  • Galician, the language spoken in northwestern Spain, is closely related to Portuguese and could be regarded as a dialect of Portuguese (or vice versa);
  • Paris has the largest community of Portuguese speakers (outside their official countries);
  • Portuguese is the official language of: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe, also being co-official with Portuguese and French in Equatorial Guinea, with Cantonese Chinese in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau, and with Tetum in East Timor.

The Translation Studio offers fun and communication-based Portuguese lessons you should definitely consider taking before the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Preparing Your Software Strings for Translation

Photo of a computer screen for Software strings translation

In general, people tend to think of translation as the translation of contracts, manuals or medical reports, as well as many other straight forward documents. However, the translation industry has expanded way beyond its original and more traditional paper format, and these days, texts come in various formats, such as websites and many different user interface (UI) strings for different types of software.

These formats present their own challenges and difficulties, and most importantly, the software strings used for the above formats are usually sent to the translation agency without any context, which makes it hard for us to understand, and therefore, translate the strings appropriately.

Key points to keep in mind when preparing your software strings for translation:

  • Use appropriate English
  • Keep in mind text expansion in other languages
  • Be consistent with your messages; this way, consistency will also be maintained in the target language
  • Use sentences or phrases that are grammatically correct
  • Keep noun gender in mind when creating your English strings, other languages have female/male noun markers and therefore, the correct gender will need to be used
  • Avoid unusual markups and control characters
  • Provide helpful context when necessary and/or screenshots of your software
  • Localise your software for the target language, including graphics, cultural correctness and format
  • Once the translation and localisation process is ready, test your software in the target language

How TTS Can Help

The Translation Studio has been translating User Interfaces and Software Strings for over 10 years in multiple languages. We have an expert team of linguists who specialise in software strings translation in most key languages, including Arabic, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Mongolian and many more.

TTS also provides multilingual software testing services and localisation services to help you take your software abroad with an appropriate and relevant message and addressed to the right audience.
