Facts about the Turkish Language

The Turkish language belongs to the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family. It has the largest number of speakers within the Turkic languages. Turkish is the official language of Turkey and it is spoken by small groups of ethnic Turks in Iraq, Greece, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and some other regions of Eastern Europe. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and France also have large Turkish immigrant communities, the most populous Turkish community being in Germany. In total, over 63 million people speak Turkish around the world.

As the official administrative language of the Ottoman Turks, Turkish spread further with the continuing Ottoman conquests, into the Balkans and central Europe to the north and into the Arab lands and North Africa to the south. Turkish became the lingua franca in many of these regions, and the impact of the Turkish language on the indigenous languages after centuries of contact is clearly discernible today.

Turkish has a number of dialects. Ethnologue lists the following major varieties of the language:

-          Eastern Turkish which is further subdivided into Eskisehir, Razgrad, Dinler, Rumelian, Karamanli, Edirne, Gaziantep, and Urfa

-          Western, or Danubian Turkish

The Turkish language shares a core vocabulary with the other Turkic languages and exhibits characteristic common features: vowel harmony, agglutination, and in the syntactic level, left-branching. Turkish has eight vowels, four pairs with corresponding front/back, high/low, and rounded/unrounded sounds, which form the basis for vowel harmony.

Modern Standard Turkish is based on the variety spoken in Turkey’s capital. Istanbul.

The country’s seat of power and our Corporate Language Training in Canberra

Parilament House, Canberra, Australia

The capital city of Canberra was chosen as such by means of a compromise between the two rivalling cities fighting for the role: Melbourne and Sydney. With an origin much like the city of Washington DC in the United States, its initial development stems from the blueprint of Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin after winning an international competition for its design.

As the seat of power in Australia, Canberra houses very important institutions such as the Parliament House and the High Court, as well as numerous government departments and agencies. The Federal Government is considered the largest single employer of the city with its high proportion of public servants and related employees. Here, unemployment is low while the average income surpasses national levels.

The population of Canberra is supplied by its ready and rich availability of high quality tertiary education. Canberrans are relatively young, highly mobile and well educated. It also has a good percentage of immigrants adding to its vibrant cultural mix, and while we are at it – language. While the majority of residents only speak English at home, a good number of Mandarin, Italian, Vietnamese, Cantonese and Spanish residents help to enrich life in Canberra.

Succeed in Canberra with your foreign language skills

In a well-educated and highly competitive environment such as Canberra, it is not an option in government, politics or business to be limited with regards to foreign language communication skills. Even for a local with very good English, the hard work doesn’t end here as recruiters are more and more often on the hunt for workers with top-notch foreign language skills and potential for management.
Building effective and lasting working relationships as well as delivering optimum results at work are all skills that require strong communication, be it verbally, written or through body language. Those working in local and central government should be able to interact with people from various fields, including colleagues from other fields of government and more challenging – the public.

Interesting facts about Romania and our Romanian NAATI Certified Translation Services

The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania

As a Romanian myself, I have been asked many times: “What language do you speak in Romania? Russian?” To the surprise of many people, the answer is No. Romania, a pretty little country in Eastern Europe, has its own, very beautiful language: Romanian.

The Romanian language is primarily spoken today in the eastern European countries of Romania and Moldova, where it holds official language status. An estimated 22 million people in Romania claim Daco-Romanian to be their native language. There are an estimated 24 to 28 million Romanian speakers around the world and this includes all four dialects of the Romanian language.

The Romanian language has a unique history as an Eastern Romance language. Romanian is classified as a Romance language and it is primarily derived from Latin, specifically from the Latin language once spoken in Dacia, a province of ancient Rome.

There are four primary dialects in the Romanian language: Daco-Romanian, Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian, and Istro-Romanian. Spoken throughout Romania and Moldova, Daco-Romanian, also known as proper Romanian, is the primary dialect that serves as the basis for the standard Romanian language. These four primary dialects are not mutually intelligible as they differ greatly from one another.

The capital of Romania is Bucharest and it is the sixth largest city in the European Union. Here, you can enjoy our traditional drink, Tuica, which is made out of plums and you can also visit the Parliament Palace which, according to the World Records Academy, is the world’s largest civilian building with an administrative function and most expensive administrative building.

How Important are Corporate Language Skills and Corporate Language Lessons in Brisbane?

Corporate Language Lessons in Brisbane.

Yes, Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city, but since anyone can remember, Brisbane has been somehow considered a distant cousin to Sydney and Melbourne: a sleepy and lethargic country town hiding behind the façade of a big bustling city. In recent years, however, Brisbane has started to wake up form hibernation and is casually coming out as one of the most sought after places to live in Australia with people moving up here estimated at a minimum of 1000 per week.

Recently, Brisbane has seen impressive economic growth as a result of the boom in resources, with white-collar industries which include I.T., financial services, higher learning and public sector administration that is essentially concentrated in and around its fast growing central business district which includes its recently developed office zones in inner Brisbane suburbia.

With the influx of new talent and stirring of the cultural melting pot, it is no wonder that businesses in Brisbane, however well established, face challenges and issues brought about by the increasing diversity.

The serious effects of lack of Foreign Language Skills in the business world

Losing potential or actual business due to confusion and misinterpretation through language and culture can be very costly for a company, amounting to millions of dollars. Deals and agreements could get lost because of the insufficient understanding from both parties and may result in loss of ROI or return on investment in overseas infrastructure, direct loss in business revenue, and irreparable damage of an important concept of a “competitive edge.” The development of new businesses, and very importantly, negotiating complex arrangements, currently expects a high level of knowledge of the language and culture of the locality in question at an increasing pace.
