Facts about the Turkish Language

The Turkish language belongs to the Turkic branch of the Altaic language family. It has the largest number of speakers within the Turkic languages. Turkish is the official language of Turkey and it is spoken by small groups of ethnic Turks in Iraq, Greece, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and some other regions of Eastern Europe. Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and France also have large Turkish immigrant communities, the most populous Turkish community being in Germany. In total, over 63 million people speak Turkish around the world.

As the official administrative language of the Ottoman Turks, Turkish spread further with the continuing Ottoman conquests, into the Balkans and central Europe to the north and into the Arab lands and North Africa to the south. Turkish became the lingua franca in many of these regions, and the impact of the Turkish language on the indigenous languages after centuries of contact is clearly discernible today.

Turkish has a number of dialects. Ethnologue lists the following major varieties of the language:

-          Eastern Turkish which is further subdivided into Eskisehir, Razgrad, Dinler, Rumelian, Karamanli, Edirne, Gaziantep, and Urfa

-          Western, or Danubian Turkish

The Turkish language shares a core vocabulary with the other Turkic languages and exhibits characteristic common features: vowel harmony, agglutination, and in the syntactic level, left-branching. Turkish has eight vowels, four pairs with corresponding front/back, high/low, and rounded/unrounded sounds, which form the basis for vowel harmony.

Modern Standard Turkish is based on the variety spoken in Turkey’s capital. Istanbul.
